About Gene

I'm Gene, the person behind Sear My Steak. I'm a growth marketer and builder in Savannah, Georgia, a husband and a dad of two. I didn't eat my first steak until my late 30s, and this site is what I wish I'd had when I started cooking them.

Why didn't I eat steak until my late 30s?

When I was 9, my mother saw something on TV saying red meat sits undigested in your gut and slowly kills you. So she told us kids to stop eating it, and we did.

About a month later she walked in with a pack of salami. I said, “I thought we weren't eating meat.” She said, “You guys aren't eating meat.” That rule stuck with me far longer than it stuck with her. For most of my life I didn't eat red meat at all.

What did I get wrong about steak?

Almost everything, at first. I didn't understand the temperatures or the best way to cook a steak. I thought a pink center meant the steak was bleeding and still raw. I had picked up a lot of myths and misconceptions about beef along the way.

What changed it was learning to cook to temperature instead of guessing. Once I could see why a steak turns out the way it does, I stopped being nervous about it and started enjoying it.

Why did I build Sear My Steak?

Now I love beef. I love cooking steak, and I make burgers, ground beef and tacos for my kids. I feel stronger, and my whole outlook on it has changed.

I built this site for people who love steak and beef, or want to, and want straight answers without the myths. Every number here is checked against at least two independent, authoritative sources (see our editorial standards), and the cook planner shows you the inside of your steak before it touches the pan.

What else do I do?

I've spent 14 years in marketing. Before this site I built and sold Grill Masters Box, a subscription box for grilling fans, and I designed a party card game called One Gotta Go. Outside of work you'll find me woodworking, running, driving my Jeep, or traveling with my wife.
